| Electrolytic
ozone generation
Ozone is formed from O2
by splitting purified tap water into oxygen and hydrogen using a
patented membrane. Ozone produced by electrolytic generators is
highly concentrated and very pure, since oxygen constitutes 88.8%
of the mass of water. Electrolytic ozone generation does not produce
any harmful substances or by-products. No feed gas or expensive
external equipment required.
Corona discharge method
Ozone is formed from O2
by high voltage electrical discharges in a corona discharge tube.
Small corona discharge generators produce extremely toxic nitrogen
oxides as a by-product. Besides, ozone produced by these generators
is neither pure nor highly concentrated, because air contains only
21% oxygen by volume. Larger corona discharge generators eliminate
nitric acid formation by using peripheral equipment such as an oxygen
concentrator, an air dryer, an air filter, a compressor, or oxygen
feed gas. This makes large generators very expensive and unsuitable
for point of use applications.
Ultraviolet light
UV ozone generators employ a light source
that generates a narrow-band ultraviolet light to produce ozone
with a concentration of only 0.5% or lower. Another disadvantage
of the UV method is that it requires the oxygen to be exposed to
the UV source for a long period of time. This makes UV ozone generators
impractical for professional use.
